According to a recent research program by the University of Colorado at Denver, if there is more bike traffic on the road, there are fewer traffic collisions.
The research team found that the rate of collisions was lower at those intersections where there were more than 200 cyclists per day. They concluded that if drivers expect to see a large number of cyclists on the street then their driving behavior changes. For example when making a right turn, they would take more care and watch out for the cyclists.
The team studied crashes at two intersections in Boulder where more than 65 percent of accidents occur and cross tabulated the results with the number of bikes in the area on any given day.
They said that Boulder was ideal for the study as such a high percentage of the population used a bicycle, around 12 per cent.
Wesley Marshall, assistant professor of civil engineering at the University, said that they were beginning to discover that cities where there are more people cycling are actually not only safer for the cyclists themselves, but for all road users.
