Early on Sunday morning, March 13, a Lakewood basketball star died in a single vehicle accident.
According to the Colorado State Patrol the accident happened at around 3.25 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 70 near Frisco. Mackenzie Forrest, aged 17 drove her SUV up an embankment before returning to the highway rolling twice down the embankment. Forrest was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle and died.
The Colorado State Patrol is investigating whether alcohol played a part in the crash and the investigation is ongoing.
Friends and classmates along with other basketball competitors are mourning her loss turning up at Lakewood High School to pay their respects. Forrest was Lakewood’s all-time leading scorer, the team captain and a friend to many. Her family are devastated at her loss but have said her legacy will live on as she was an organ donor.
