Andrew C’de Baca, a cook at a pizza restaurant and living on the streets, was seriously injured in a hit and run accident earlier this month whilst crossing a street in Lower Downtown.
According to police records, he is one of 174 people to be injured in Denver hit-and-runs this year, which is an increase of seven over the same period in 2013. Police have identified the drivers who left the scenes of the accidents in 62 cases. Hit-and-runs have now become a significant problem in Colorado.
In the case of C’de Baca, he is recovering slowly at Denver hospital and the motorcyclist who hit him has been discovered by police and charged.
According to the district attorney’s office, Michael D. Ratcliff, aged 28 has been charged with vehicular assault and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury. A few hours after the crash, Ratcliff called police and said he had hit a pedestrian with his motorcycle. Ratcliff was released from jail last week after posting $50,000 bond.
