A few weeks ago we reported on the General Motors recall debacle, and pointed out that the average person would probably be remiss to find an answer as to how such a thing could happen. After giving testimony at a congressional hearing recently, it is become clear that not only would the average GM customer have a hard time understanding what the company was thinking, but so would its CEO.
In recent testimony before the U.S. Congress GM CEO Mary Barra admitted that she had no idea why the company waited 10+ years to recall automobiles which were manufactured with a deadly defect. She did, however, assure her questioners that her team would conduct a thorough and timely investigation into the situation, and be fully transparent in the process.
One of the most troubling conclusions to be drawn from the revelation that GM’s CEO was unaware of the deadly nature of her company’s product, is that top officials in the company seemed to be truly in the dark about some of the more serious problems involving the products that they manufacture. Despite all of her attempts to assure both congressional leaders and the public that General Motors is doing everything necessary to resolve the issue, one must wonder if, given the company’s history, Barra even knows the full extent the problem she has promised to correct.
