On Sunday, June 19, a man who often drove drunk died in a head on collision in northeast Evans.
According to authorities the accident happened at around 9.30 p.m. along 37th Street near 65th Avenue when 47 year old Javier Orona-Berumen crossed the double-yellow line and collided with a vehicle being driven by 27 year old Alicia Reddy.
Orona-Berumen died and his passenger, 34 year old Lucio Valles-Rios was seriously injured and taken to hospital. Reddy suffered only minor injuries.
Orona-Berumen has been arrested for drunken driving several times. First in 1999 he was convicted of reckless driving and given a suspended 90 day jail sentence .In April 2009 he was convicted of DUI in Adams County while driving under a revoked license and was sentenced to a year in jail. In September 2010, Orona-Berumen was again arrested for drunken driving, and driving on a revoked license. He was sentenced to 120 days in jail and three years probation.
Over a period of 25 years Orona-Berumen also had several other traffic convictions which include careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while impaired and driving on a suspended license.
