Man Run Over by his Own Vehicle

A man jumped out of his own vehicle on Sunday morning and it then ran over him, leaving him critically injured.

According to the Aurora Police Department, the incident occurred at around 6.30 in the morning in the 15900 block of East Nassau Drive. The driver, who has not yet been identified, was backing a large van out of a driveway, when he accidentally dropped a burning cigarette onto the front of his jacket. He leapt out of the car to try and shake the cigarette off but the van continued to move, hit the driver, knocked him down and then the front tire rolled over his head.

The driver was taken to hospital in critical condition and police said that although his injuries are life-threatening he is expected to survive.

The adult male passenger in the vehicle was uninjured.

Following the incident the police reminded drivers of the dangers of distractions while driving, not only smoking but also eating, cell phones, reading and excessively loud music.
