Gyroplane Crash Kills Two

A gyroplane crashed into a river in western Colorado killing two people on Saturday.

According to the Mesa County Sheriff’s office, the gyroplane went into the Colorado River just after 6 p.m. on Saturday. Witnesses said that it had begun to fishtail and appeared to have sparks flashing from it before it crashed nose first into the river. No one on the ground was injured.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman, Allen Kenitzer, said that the aircraft was a Xenon gyroplane. He went on to explain that gyroplanes are similar to helicopters but are powered by propellers. Air flow created by the aircraft’s forward motion spins the rotors, which provide lift.

The sheriff’s department said both victims were adults but as yet their names are not known, nor the results of the autopsies.

Power was disrupted in the area but Grand Valley Power said service was restored by Sunday morning.

The FAA and the National Transportation Board are investigating.
